Autumnal changes in temperature and daylight are quite evident, often bringing some unwelcome side effects. Getting out of bed always seems much harder, the temptation to have ‘just 5 more minutes’, impossible to resist. In fact everything seems more difficult. Work, exercise, even going out in the evening for a social event. Seasonal lethargy, demotivation and in some cases, depression can take its toll though. So whilst we’re still early in the season, now’s a good time to implement some self-care to support you during those colder, harder months.
What is Self-Care?
Self-care is when you consciously do something to benefit your physical or mental health and well-being. It might include:
- Reading a good book
- Relaxing in the bath
- Improving your diet
- Taking regular breaks from your computer
- Ensuring you get a good night of sleep
- A date night with your partner
It’s all about setting up strategies that are geared towards functioning healthily and building resilience to deal with whatever life throws at you.
Self-Care Routines for Autumn
Create a Bedtime Routine
Creating an easy self-care routine that promotes better sleep isn’t as hard as you’d think though. It could be as simple as drinking a cup of chamomile tea, followed by a warm bath then ten minutes of a good book. The key is to be consistent and do it every night because that creates a mental cue, meaning that your brain will recognise the routine and wind down much more quickly.
Aromatherapy can also be used to enhance your bedtime routine, because with the right combination of essential oils, it can help the mind to transition into a more relaxed state. Try burning the Scentered Sleep Well Aromatherapy Candle whilst you soak in the bath. It’s a beautiful, sophisticated floral lavender blend that quietens a restless mind, promoting deep, uninterrupted, peaceful sleep. And when you do awaken, you’ll feel fully rested and restored.
Limit Social Media
Social media is undoubtedly a huge part of our lives these days and of course, there are many benefits to it. The recent Netflix series, ‘The Social Dilemma,’ shed some light on the darker side and impact that social media has on us. Manipulative technology predicts and controls human psychology which is why it’s so addictive. That can cause depression and other mental health issues as we’re finding out.
It’s important to review how much time you’re spending on social media, particularly as we head indoors and become less active during the colder months. Try limiting yourself to checking in once a day, rather than constantly. You can also turn off the notification button that sends signals to your brain that you might be missing out on something. And don’t get drawn in to thinking that everyone else has a better life than you. Photos do not represent reality!
Cup of Tea and a Good Book
There’s really nothing like sitting down with a good book and a cup of tea. Just taking a break, however short, from a frantic world does us the world of good. Reading is especially beneficial because it allows us to completely switch off from worries and anxieties, is great for cognitive function, reduces stress, strengthens the brain, and aids sleep.
Let’s face it, motivating yourself to exercise on a dark and dreary morning is hard, but the benefits of doing it are so worthwhile.
It gives you more energy, keeps you fit, triggers the happy hormone, clears your mind, and improves focus. Many people find that it’s easier to exercise in the morning before the day gets started, distractions and other commitments get in the way and whilst they feel energised.
Scentered Focus Aromatherapy Balm is a great addition to any work-out. It’s invigorating blend of Rosemary, Mint and Clary Sage is perfect for improving focus, relieving mental fatigue, and stimulating the mind and body.
Evening Skincare Routine
At this time of year when the air is chillier and less humid, there’s a serious lack of moisture. It doesn’t spell good news for the complexion though because the result is dry, chapped, and dehydrated skin.
To counteract the weather, a long-lasting moisturiser that delivers continuous hydration is needed throughout the day or night. Choose an advanced hydrator that creates a matrix across the skin cells, delivering instant moisture, preventing water loss, and gradually releasing nourishing compounds throughout the day or night. And if you’re not already using a night-time moisturiser that works in sync with the skin’s nightly circadian rhythms of repair and renewal, it’s time to add one to your skincare ritual. Our favourite night-time winter moisturiser amongst the Scentered team is Obagi Hydrate Luxe®.
