Why Self Care is So Important During Menopause?

Self care is always an important key step to implement in your everyday life, especially during menopause. During this time of uneven ovarian hormones or oestrogen being in your body, some of the common side effects like irregular periods, hot flashes, sleep disturbances and mood swings, can leave you feeling uncomfortable. During this time, you may feel like self-care becomes increasingly difficult to uphold.

In this article, we will be giving you some top tips about how to keep your self-care routine going, even through menopause by adding in some simple and easy steps which will leave you feeling more like yourself.

Keep Moving & Exercising

Having exercise as a daily part of your routine is important in all stages of your life, including when you are going through menopause. Getting your body moving should be fairly close to the top of priority list when it comes to the question of self-care. As we’re sure you know, being physically active has a long, long list of benefits, including as it helps improve your muscle strength and boost your overall energy levels, as well as preventing much scarier illnesses like diabetes and heart problems.

Exercise remains just as, if not more, important when you become perimenopausal or menopausal. During the menopause women may find themselves gaining extra weight, especially around the abdomen area. This could be because there is a decline of oestrogen levels or lifestyle factors such as diet and lack of exercise is no longer tolerated as well because the metabolism has slowed down. Regular exercise helps to manage any weight gain, as well as building strength and promoting a healthier well being.

Getting as little as 30 minutes of exercise a day, whether that be a light jog, a walk down the town or even some relaxing yoga, could make all the difference when added to your self care routine.

Stay Hydrated

A common symptom of the menopause is hot flushes, which can leave you feeling sweaty and very uncomfortable. These typically occur at night, whilst you are trying to fall asleep, but they can also come about during intervals during the day. Increasing the amount of water you drink and staying hydrated will help you feel less of the affects of your body producing more sweat.

When you perspire, you tend to lose electrolytes through your sweat glands. These are essential minerals that your body needs. Replenishing them with water or even a drink with electrolytes present in it, may assist in helping your body rebalance itself.

Drinking plenty of water is another way to help regulate your temperature. During menopause, you may find your body temperature being all over the place. If you drink cold water, this will not only help cool you down but will also ease any symptoms of skin dryness or bloating you could be experiencing.

Get Enough Sleep

Falling asleep can be hard enough, without having menopausal symptoms. Getting your full eight hours of shut eye is a critical factor in maintaining a good sense of well being and a calm mental health state.

Symptoms like night sweats could be the core reason for not being able to fall asleep. Night sweats or hot flushes can make going to bed and trying to get the recommended 7 to 9 hours of necessary sleep almost impossible.
