What are essential oils?

Let’s start off with the essential question (pun intended); what are essential oils? Ultimately, essential oils are a form of alternative medicine and are often used in aromatherapy. Essential oils come from plant extracts and help to support your mental and physical wellbeing. By breathing in a certain scent, this can cause an effect on your brain’s limbic system, which is responsible for your memories, emotions and stimulations. In other words, a very important part of your brain that helps to define how you are feeling. Essential oils can be used to lift your mood or transition moods throughout the day. You probably want to feel super focused during your work day but once you get home, you’d love to feel more relaxed. Aromatherapy and essential oils can help with this.

How do essential oils affect your mood?

So how does it work exactly? Should you expect to forget about all negative emotions once you have inhaled an essential oil? Unfortunately, that’s not how it works. One of the key things to remember is that essential oils won’t be able to help you if you’re not open to it. Make sure you go into it with an open mind and positive attitude, and you’ll notice it has more effect that way. As we previously touched on, essential oils can change your mood by triggering the limbic system of your brain. Different scents will bring different mood transitions so it’s really about knowing what mood you want to transition to. If you’re feeling down and negative, it may be worth trying a scent with Grapefruit, Lemon and Mint, which can be found in our HAPPY Aromatherapy Balm. However if you’re struggling to fall asleep at night, it’s best to use an essential oil with hints of Lavender, Chamomile or Palmarosa, like our SLEEP WELL collection.
