3 steps to a healthier and calmer mind

Being calm is a mental state we all aim for; it gives us the ability to feel at peace and in control. Of course, being human we can’t be calm every day at every minute, but it’s a good tool to learn how to be calm when we need it the most.

The benefits of being calm can range from being in control of your emotions allowing you to handle situations without a clouded mind impairing your judgement. It can increase your breathing capacity, allowing your body to carry more oxygen around the body. Reduce the negative physical and mental impact of stress and the stress hormones that come with it.

To follow the calm nature of this blog we wanted to keep it nice and simple, in helping you reach calm in 3 steps.

  • Acknowledgement

    The first step to being calm in acknowledging that you aren’t. Take a moment to sit still, and consciously be mindful of your body and your thoughts. Remind yourself that negative thoughts don’t help any situations, and also note how your body is feeling, are you hungry? Thirsty? Tired? All these feelings can affect your ability to reach a calm state.
  • Breathe

    Now it’s time to take active steps towards calm. Focus on your breath. Inhale deeply for the count of 6, and exhale deeply for the count of 6. Do this however long you need. During this time it's perfectly normal to allow yourself to think of what’s troubling you. Continue to count your breath and only focus on your breathing, we will get to your thoughts in the next step. 
  • Approach with Ease

    This is the last step in the cycle, but it doesn’t have to be the last time you complete this cycle. Now, don’t ignore your thoughts. One of the best ways to tackle negative thoughts is to write a list of what’s troubling you and think of a solution or allow yourself to remember that somethings are potential outcomes but not the only outcome, so it’s needless to worry ahead of time. Then work your way through your list, and at the end of every day, repeat the steps and take satisfaction in your list reducing, or being able to manage it more effectively.
